  3. How Many Photos in an Indian Wedding Album?

How many photos go in an Indian wedding album

Updated 2 November 2026 · by Phopho and Toto

Most Indian wedding albums hold somewhere between 150 and 400 photos, and a 40-sheet 12 × 36 album with balanced layouts holds roughly 240 to 320. The real number is your album maker's: it depends on how many sheets you pay for, the size of the book and how full each page is.

The short answer

Plan for about 150 to 400 photos, and expect most albums to land somewhere around 200 to 300. A 40-sheet 12 × 36 album with a hero photo and a few smaller ones on each spread holds roughly 240 to 320 photos.

That range is a rule of thumb, not a rule. Every album maker builds layouts their own way, and two albums with the same number of sheets can hold very different numbers of photos. Treat the numbers on this page as a way to start the conversation, then let your album maker tell you what their book holds.

The useful question is not "how many photos should we have?" It is "how many sheets are we getting, how full do we want them, and how do we share them between the functions?" Answer those three and the number follows.

Why Indian albums run larger than the guides say

Indian wedding albums usually hold more photos because there is more wedding to tell. Guides written for a one-day wedding often suggest something like 50 to 100 photos. A wedding with haldi, mehendi, sangeet, pheras and a reception has five chapters, each with its own rituals, outfits and people.

Family is the other reason. Parents, grandparents, bua, mama, cousins and the friends who danced all night all expect to find themselves in the album. Group photos on the stage at the reception alone can fill several sheets.

So the number grows with the wedding, and it depends on the album maker. Some couples choose one big album; some choose two volumes; some keep the main album tight and make a separate one for the family. None of these is wrong.

Every function brings its own rituals and its own people, which is why Indian albums run long.

Sheets, pages and spreads

A sheet is one open spread of the album, the two facing pages you see when the book lies open. Most Indian album makers quote prices by sheets, so a 40-sheet album has 40 spreads and 80 pages. If your album maker says pages, halve it to get sheets.

It matters because the same number means two very different books. "Forty pages" is twenty spreads; "forty sheets" is twice as much album. Ask which one they mean before you compare quotes.

Common album sizes in India

The 12 × 36 album, 12 × 18 when closed, is the size most Indian couples are offered first. It opens flat into a wide panorama that suits stage photos and long group lines. Smaller and squarer books hold fewer photos per sheet because there is less paper to share.

12 × 24Square when closed, 12 × 12About 8 in 10 as many photos
10 × 10 or smallerA smaller book, 10 × 20 openAbout 6 in 10 as many photos

These comparisons are rules of thumb. A skilled album maker can fit a surprising number of photos on a small spread, and a big spread with one photo across it holds exactly one.

Photos per sheet, by how full the pages are

How full you want each spread decides the number more than anything else. An airy album with one big photo a page holds a few photos per sheet; a full album with collages holds three times as many. Most couples end up in between.

If you love the big, quiet photos, go airy and accept a smaller number. If every relative must appear, go fuller, or add sheets. The calculator on this site does the sums for your own size and sheets.

A split by function for a 3 to 5 function wedding

Give the pheras the biggest share, about a third of the album in a five-function wedding, and split the rest between the other functions by how much happened at each. A sangeet with performances and a reception with a long stage line need more room than a short haldi.

Here is one way to share a 40-sheet, balanced album, roughly 240 to 320 photos. The weights behind it are rules of thumb: change them for your wedding.

A suggested split, 40 sheets, balanced layouts
FunctionThree functionsFive functions
HaldiNot in this wedding35 to 50
Mehendi55 to 7535 to 50
SangeetNot in this wedding45 to 60
Pheras115 to 15075 to 100
Reception70 to 9545 to 60

Add a function and the others shrink, unless you add sheets too. Couples often find a short function, such as a tilak or a puja at home, needs only a sheet or two.

Inside each function: the two of you, family and guests

Within each function, start with the two of you, then family, then guests and decor. A practical balance is about half the photos with one or both of you in them, a good share with family, and a few guests and decor photos to set the scene.

This is where large folders go wrong. A function with three hundred guest photos and twelve of the two of you produces a chapter of strangers. Count the people before you count the photos.

  • The two of you, together and each of you alone
  • You with family: parents, grandparents, siblings
  • You with guests: friends, colleagues, the stage line
  • Family and friends on their own, dancing, laughing, crying
  • Venue and decor: one or two to open each chapter

The parents' album

A parents' album is usually smaller than yours, often about half the size, and fuller of family. For a couple's album of roughly 240 to 320 photos, a parents' album of about 100 to 190 photos is a common shape.

Parents care about different photos. They want the rituals they performed, the relatives who travelled, the kanyadaan, the vidaai. They need fewer portraits of the two of you and more of the family around you. Many couples give each side its own parents' album.

Parents' albums lean towards the family photos: the stage line, the rituals, the relatives who came.

How to settle the number with your album maker

  1. Ask how many sheets your package includes, and what each extra sheet costs.
  2. Ask what size the album is, open and closed.
  3. Look at two or three albums they have made and say which feels right: airy, balanced or full.
  4. Agree a number of photos, or a range, and by when they need them.
  5. Ask how they want the photos: one folder, numbered in album order, or one folder per function.

Write the answers down and share them in the family group. It saves the argument later about why Bua is not on the cover.

Where Phopho and Toto fits

Phopho and Toto turns the folder your photographer sent, up to 12,000 photos, into a first album at the size you choose. We find the two of you, recognise your family and put every photo in its function. Usually 35 to 70 minutes once your photos are in.

You choose how big an album and how many from each function, then keep, love, swap or set aside any photo. When the number is right, send it to your album maker or download it.

Questions people ask

How many photos should an Indian wedding album have?

Most land between 150 and 400, many around 200 to 300. Ask your album maker how many sheets you get and how full they like the pages, then work out the number from that.

How many photos fit on one sheet of a 12 × 36 album?

As a rule of thumb, 3 to 5 for airy, 6 to 8 for balanced, 9 to 12 for full layouts. Your album maker's layouts decide the real number.

Is a sheet the same as a page?

No. A sheet is one open spread, two facing pages. A 40-sheet album has 80 pages. Ask which one a quote means before you compare album makers.

How many sheets do Indian wedding albums usually have?

It varies a lot by album maker and package. Ask for the number of sheets in writing, and what an extra sheet costs, before you start choosing photos.

How many photos per function?

A rule of thumb: give the pheras the biggest share, about a third in a five-function wedding, and share the rest between the other functions by how much happened at each. The calculator on this site suggests a split for your own functions.

Should the parents' album have the same photos?

Usually not. A parents' album is often about half the size, with more of the rituals and the relatives and fewer portraits of the two of you.
