  3. Photographer Sent Thousands of Photos? What to Do Next

Your photographer sent 4,000 photos. Now what?

Updated 19 October 2026 · by Phopho and Toto

First, keep a safe copy. Then do not try to choose the best photos; find the two of you, then your family, then make sure every function is there, and leave the similar photos for last. Agree a number and a date with your album maker, bring the family in once, and the folder becomes an album.

Is this many photos normal?

Yes. A multi-day Indian wedding with two photographers, a candid team and five functions often brings thousands of photos. It does not mean anything went wrong; it means the photographer did not miss the moment Nani wiped her eyes.

Most of those photos are not meant for the album. They are there so that one of every ten similar photos has everyone's eyes open. The album usually needs a few hundred; the rest stay in the folder, safe, for whoever wants them later.

So the job is not to love four thousand photos. It is to find the few hundred that tell the wedding, without losing anyone who must be in it.

What to do first: keep a safe copy

Before anything else, make sure the photos exist in two places you control. A Google Drive link from the photographer, or a pen drive, is one copy; a download to your laptop or your own Drive is the second.

Ask the photographer how long their link stays open. Links can be taken down when a studio clears space, and a pen drive can be lost in the move after the wedding. Ten minutes now saves a panic in six months.

Download it, or work from Google Drive?

If your laptop has the space, download the whole folder once and keep the original link too. If it does not, copy the folder into your own Google Drive and work from there. Either way, keep the photographer's file names: your album maker will use them.

The order to choose in

Choose by people first and quality last. Couples stall when they try to judge every photo equally, one at a time, from the first frame of the haldi. An order that starts with who must be in the album finishes; an order that starts with the best photo does not.

  1. Find the photos of the two of you, at every function.
  2. Find your parents, grandparents and siblings, and make sure each of them is there.
  3. Check every function has its chapter: haldi, mehendi, sangeet, pheras, reception, and any others.
  4. Choose how big an album, and roughly how many photos for each function.
  5. Within each function, keep the best of each group of similar photos and set aside the rest.
  6. Look through the whole album once, start to finish, before you send it.

Set aside, do not throw away. Every photo stays in the photographer's folder; you are only deciding what goes in this book.

How many photos you are aiming for

Most Indian wedding albums hold somewhere between 150 and 400 photos, depending on the album maker's sheets and how full the pages are. Ask your album maker for their number before you start, so you are choosing towards something.

Our guide to how many photos go in an Indian wedding album has the rules of thumb, and the wedding album calculator does the sums for your size and sheets.

Bringing the family in

Bring the family in once, with a clear question, after you have a first album. "Which of these do you love?" gets answers; "have a look at the folder" gets silence, or forty voice notes about a cousin's outfit.

Mummy gets a say. So does Papa, and probably Nani. Send them the album, or the photos from their function, and ask them to mark the ones they love. You still decide; their hearts tell you what matters to them.

Keep the parents' album in mind. Photos the family loves but that do not fit your album may belong in theirs.

Deadlines with the album maker

Agree three things with your album maker: how many photos, by when, and in what form. Without a date, the folder waits; with one, the album gets made.

Ask whether they want one folder in album order, one folder per function, or a list of file names. Many album makers are happy with the photos numbered in the order they should appear, keeping the photographer's file name after the number.

  • How many photos, or sheets, the package includes
  • The date they need your photos by, and the date the album arrives
  • How they want the files: one folder, by function, or a list
  • How many rounds of changes are included once they show you the layout

When doing it yourself is enough

If the folder is a few hundred photos, or you already know the photos you love, an evening together with a shared folder may be all you need. Make two folders, "album" and "not this time", and move photos between them.

If the folder is thousands, months old, or simply too heavy to open again, it helps to start from an album that is already made and change it, instead of starting from the folder.

Where Phopho and Toto fits

Phopho and Toto does the first sorting for you. Bring the whole folder, up to 12,000 photos, from your laptop, your phone or Google Drive. We find the two of you, recognise your family, put every photo in its function, set aside the blurry ones and the similar ones, and make the first album at the size you choose. Usually 35 to 70 minutes once your photos are in.

You tell us who is who, choose how many from each function, then keep, love, swap or set aside any photo. Send family one link to heart the photos they love. When it is right, send it to your album maker or download it.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to get thousands of wedding photos?

Yes, for a multi-day Indian wedding it is common. Most of them are similar photos taken so one has everyone at their best; the album usually needs a few hundred.

What should we do first with the photographer's Google Drive link?

Make a second copy you control: download it, or copy it into your own Drive. Ask the photographer how long their link stays open.

Where do we start choosing?

With the two of you, then family, then a check that every function is there. Leave the similar photos for last.

How many photos should we give the album maker?

Ask them for their number first. Most Indian albums hold somewhere between 150 and 400 photos, depending on the sheets and how full the pages are.

How do we involve parents without it taking months?

Show them a first album, not the folder, and ask one question: which do you love? You still decide what goes in.

Will the photographer mind if we use a tool to choose?

It can help them: their work is the photos, and choosing them is yours. Your album maker gets your photos sooner, chosen by the two of you.
