  3. When the photos arrive

When will our wedding photos arrive, and what should we ask for?

Updated 20 October 2026 · by Phopho and Toto

Usually in three stages: a few sneak peeks within days, the full edited set some weeks later, and the album after you have chosen its photos. How long each takes depends on the studio and the season, so the useful thing is to ask for dates in writing, and to ask for the photos in a form you can use: every edited photo, full size, grouped by function, on a link that stays open.

The short answer

There is no standard wait. Every studio sets its own, and the same studio is slower in the busy months. What you can control is what you agree before the wedding: a date for each stage, and what each stage contains.

The album is the stage that waits longest, and often the wait is not the photographer's. Many albums cannot be made until the two of you choose their photos, so the clock that matters most after the photos arrive is yours.

The three stages, in order

Many Indian wedding photographers deliver in roughly this order. The names differ from studio to studio, and some combine stages, so ask yours what they call each one.

Videos and films usually run on their own clock, often after the photos. If the package has a film, ask for its date separately.

How long it usually takes

Sneak peeks often come within the first days. The full set is the stage that varies most. WedMeGood vendor profiles show each studio's own delivery time, and many of the listings we read in October 2026 promised the photos over many weeks; a few said months. Treat any figure you see as that studio's promise, not a rule.

The album comes last because it waits on two things: your choice of photos, and the album maker's design and printing after that. Ask your album maker how long they need once they have your photos, and add the time you will take to choose.

Why it takes as long as it does

Be fair to the photographer. A multi-day wedding can mean thousands of photos to look through, and each one kept is checked for colour and light so the haldi does not look green and the reception does not look orange. A good edit is slow work, done by people.

The season matters too. In the busy months, many photographers shoot one wedding after another and edit in the gaps. A wait that feels long is often a studio doing the work properly, not ignoring you. What helps everyone is a date agreed at the start, so nobody is guessing.

What to ask for before the wedding

Ask these while you are booking, when it is easy, and get the answers in the contract or an email. A message that says "we will send everything" can mean very different things to the two of you and to the studio.

  • The full set or only the best: will you get every edited photo, or only the ones the studio chose for you?
  • Full size or compressed: are the photos full resolution, the size you would print from, or smaller copies for phones?
  • Grouped by function: will the photos come in one folder per function, or all together?
  • How they arrive: a Google Drive link, another link, or a hard disk or pen drive?
  • How long the link stays open: a date, not "for a while"
  • RAW files: are they included, and if so, at what cost?
  • Who chooses the album photos: the studio, the two of you, or both, and how many the album holds
  • The dates: sneak peeks, the full set, and the album, each with its own date

RAW or JPEG: which do you need?

For the album and for sharing, you need the edited JPEG photos. RAW files are what the camera records before any editing: very large, opened only with special software, and not the finished look the photographer worked on.

Many photographers do not hand over RAW files, and that is a normal practice, not a sign of anything hidden: the edited photo is the work you paid for. If you want RAW files for a reason, ask before the wedding and expect it to be a separate request.

Who chooses the album photos, and by when

Some studios choose the album photos and send you a layout to approve. Others ask you to choose and send them a list. Ask which, before the wedding, and ask how many photos or sheets the package includes, so you know what you are choosing towards.

If the choosing is yours, agree a date for it. Without one, the folder waits on a laptop and the album never gets made. Our guide to how many photos go in an Indian wedding album, and the wedding album calculator, help you agree the number.

What to check when the full set arrives

Check the set the week it arrives, while the photographer still remembers your wedding and the files are easy to send again.

  1. Count the photos in each function, and make sure no function is missing.
  2. Open a few photos from each function on a laptop and zoom in: they should stay sharp, which tells you they are full size.
  3. Check the photos of the people who matter most: both sets of parents, grandparents, siblings.
  4. Write down the date the link closes, and make your own copy before it.
  5. Reply to the photographer to say it arrived, and ask about anything that seems to be missing.

What to do next, the copy, the order to choose in, the family, is in our guide for when your photographer sent thousands of photos. If it came as a Google Drive link, our Google Drive guide covers the download and sharing.

A checklist you can copy

Paste this into a note or the family group, and tick it off with your photographer.

  • Every edited photo, not only the ones the studio liked best
  • Full-size photos, the size you would print from
  • One folder per function
  • A Google Drive link or a drive, and the date the link closes
  • RAW files: yes or no, agreed
  • Who chooses the album photos, and how many
  • A date for the sneak peeks, the full set and the album
  • A copy of our own within a week of the link

Where Phopho and Toto fits

When the full set arrives, Phopho and Toto does the first sorting. Bring the whole folder from your laptop, your phone or the photographer's Google Drive link. We find the two of you, put every photo in its function and make the first album at the size you choose. Usually 35 to 70 minutes once your photos are in.

You change anything, bring the family in once, and send it to your album maker when it is right. Choosing stops being the stage that waits.

Questions people ask

How long does a photographer take to deliver wedding photos?

It varies by studio and season. Sneak peeks often come within days; the full edited set often takes many weeks. Ask your photographer for a date in writing.

Why are the album photos taking so long?

Often because the album waits for the two of you to choose its photos. Ask whether the studio is waiting on you, and agree a date for choosing.

Should we get every photo or only the photographer's best?

Ask for every edited photo. The ones the studio liked best are lovely, but the photo of Nani you want may not be among them.

How do we know the photos are full size?

Open a few on a laptop and zoom in; full-size photos stay sharp. Ask the photographer directly too: "Are these the files you would print from?"

Do we need the RAW files?

Many couples never need them. The edited JPEG photos are what albums and sharing use. Many photographers do not hand over RAW files; ask before the wedding if you want them.

How long will the Google Drive link stay open?

Only the photographer knows, so ask for a date. Make a copy you control within a week, whatever the answer.

Who chooses the photos for the album?

It depends on the studio. Some choose and send a layout; many ask the couple. Ask before the wedding, with the number of photos and a date.
