Google Photos and your wedding album: what it does, what it leaves to you
Google Photos is a good place to keep, find and share wedding photos: it can group faces, hold albums of up to 20,000 photos and let family add to a shared album. What it does not do is decide which few hundred go in the album, function by function. That part is still yours, or ours.
The short answer
Use Google Photos to find photos and share them. Use it to make the album if the folder is small and you enjoy choosing. If the folder is thousands of photos from five functions, starting from an album that is already made, and still yours to change, is usually faster.
This page restates what Google's own help pages say, checked in October 2026. Google changes its features from time to time, so check its help pages before you decide.
What Google Photos does well
Face groups. Google's help says that with face groups on, Google Photos groups photos that are likely to be of the same person. You can add a name or nickname to a group, the names are visible only to you, and you can then search your photos by that name. It is good for "show me every photo of Nani".
Albums. You can make an album by selecting photos, add more later, and Google's help says an album can hold up to 20,000 photos or videos, so even a big wedding fits in one.
Sharing. Google's help says that when you share an album, anyone with access can view the photos and add to it, and that a shared link lets anyone with the link view them. A Collaborate setting decides whether people with the link can add photos. For a family that wants to pool its phone photos in one place, this is hard to beat.
Memories. Google Photos can organise photos into a timeline of moments and make some creations automatically, which some couples enjoy on the wedding anniversary.
Where to be careful
Availability. Google's help says face groups are not available in all regions, domains or account types, and the setting is called Group similar faces. If you do not see it, it may not be available for your account.
Quality and space. Google's help says Original quality keeps photos as they were taken, while Storage saver stores them at a slightly reduced quality and resizes photos over 16 MP to 16 MP. Both count against your Google storage, which Google says is up to 15 GB free, shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos. A large wedding in Original quality can fill that on its own.
For the album, keep the photographer's original files, whatever you do in Google Photos.
What it leaves to you
Google Photos keeps everything, which is its job. Making the album is a different job: deciding which few hundred of the thousands go in, giving each function its chapter, making sure each side of the family is there, and keeping the best of ten similar photos.
In Google Photos you do that by hand: open each face group, look through the photos, and add them to an album one by one. It works, and many couples have done it. It takes as long as the folder is big.
Making the album in Google Photos yourselves
If you choose to do it in Google Photos, an order helps more than any setting.
- Add the photographer's photos in Original quality, if your storage allows.
- Turn on face groups, where available, and name the two of you and your close family.
- Make one album per function: Haldi, Sangeet, Pheras, Reception.
- Fill each with the two of you first, then family, then a few guests.
- Keep the best of each group of similar photos and move on.
- Count each album against the number your album maker gave you.
Our guide to choosing wedding album photos explains the order in more detail, and it works the same in Google Photos as anywhere else.

When Google Photos is the better choice
- The folder is a few hundred photos and you already know the ones you love
- Your photos are already in Google Photos and you enjoy choosing them yourselves
- You want family to add their own phone photos to one shared album
- You want to keep and search every photo for years, not only the album
- You would rather not pay for anything beyond your Google storage
When Phopho and Toto fits better
When the folder is thousands of photos and the album is waiting. Bring the whole folder, up to 12,000 photos, from Google Drive, a laptop or a phone. We find the two of you, recognise your family, put every photo in its function, keep the best of each group of similar photos, and make the first album at the size you choose. Usually 35 to 70 minutes once your photos are in.
You change anything, and when it is right we send the full-size photos, numbered in album order, to your album maker. Your photos are stored and sorted in Mumbai and used only to make your album.
Using both
Many couples will. Keep the whole wedding in Google Photos for the family to scroll and add to, and make the album with us from the photographer's originals. They do different jobs, and neither gets in the other's way.

Questions people ask
Can Google Photos make our wedding album?
You can make albums in it by choosing photos yourselves, and face groups help you find people where the feature is available. Deciding what goes in, function by function, is still yours to do.
Does Google Photos sort wedding photos by function?
Not by function. It groups faces where available and holds the albums you make; giving each function its own chapter is up to you.
How many photos can a Google Photos album hold?
Google's help says up to 20,000 photos or videos in one album.
Will Google Photos reduce the quality of our wedding photos?
In Original quality, Google says no. In Storage saver, Google says photos are stored at slightly reduced quality and resized to 16 MP if larger.
Is Phopho and Toto a replacement for Google Photos?
No. Google Photos keeps and shares your whole library. We make the album from the folder, and then our part is done.
What does Phopho and Toto cost?
₹99 to start, counted in the total. The rest comes in Choosing, after 10 free changes. Changed your mind? Message us within 14 days of seeing your sorted photos and your ₹99 comes back.
