Photo-sharing apps, culling tools and album sorting: which does what
They solve different problems. Photo-sharing apps get each guest their own photos. Culling tools help photographers choose what to edit and deliver. Google Photos groups faces in your own library. Phopho and Toto helps the two of you turn the delivered folder into your wedding album. Many couples use more than one.
The short answer
Ask who the tool is for and when it is used. Guest photo-sharing apps are for guests, during and after the wedding. Culling tools are for photographers, before they deliver. Phopho and Toto is for the couple, after the photographer delivers, and its job is the album.
None of these replaces the others, and none replaces your photographer or your album maker. The right question is which problem you have today.
Guest photo-sharing apps
Guest photo-sharing apps send each guest the photos they appear in. Typically the photographer or the family adds the photos, guests open a link or scan a code, and face recognition finds their photos for them.
Kwikpic calls itself a smart photo-sharing app. Its app listing says it sorts and delivers photos using face recognition, and lets you share them with friends, family and guests.
Kamero says it helps you capture, manage and share event photos; its site says guests find their photos by taking a selfie. It also describes a way to mark photos for printed albums.
SortWedPics says it sorts wedding photos so that every guest gets their own gallery, detecting faces across thousands of photos, with a private link for each guest.
These are the right tool when the question is "how does everyone get their photos?" They are built around people and galleries; making the couple's album by function is not what they describe as their main job.
Photographers' culling tools
Culling tools are for photographers. They help a photographer go through a shoot, set aside weak and similar frames, and choose what to edit before the photos reach you. You usually never see them; you see their result in the folder you receive.
Aftershoot describes itself as software that helps photographers cull, edit and retouch in one app, and share galleries with their clients.
Narrative Select describes itself as culling software for photographers that looks at faces, focus and closed eyes, and ranks frames within each scene, with the photographer making the final call.
Imagen describes culling and editing for photographers working in Lightroom, flagging photos for the photographer to look at and editing them in the photographer's own style.
If your photographer used one, you may still get thousands of photos: culling makes the delivery better, but it does not make the album. That is still to do.
Google Photos face groups
Google Photos can group photos of the same face in your own library, and you can name each group and search by that name. Its help pages say face grouping is not available in every country, domain or account type.
It is good for finding "every photo of Nani". It keeps everything, so it does not decide which photos go in an album, and it does not sort the wedding by function.
Phopho and Toto
Phopho and Toto is for the two of you, after the photographer delivers. Bring the whole folder, up to 12,000 photos, from your laptop, your phone or Google Drive. We find the two of you, recognise your family, put every photo in its function, set aside the blurry ones and the similar ones, and make the first album at the size you choose. Usually 35 to 70 minutes once your photos are in.
You keep, love, swap or set aside any photo, ask family to heart the ones they love, and send the album to your album maker or download it. We are not a gallery for guests, and we do not help photographers before delivery.

Which one do you need?
Start from the problem you have today. If guests keep asking for their photos, a photo-sharing app answers that. If you are a photographer with a shoot to deliver, a culling tool is built for you. If the folder has arrived and the album is waiting, that is the job Phopho and Toto does.
- "Everyone wants their photos": a guest photo-sharing app
- "I have a shoot to edit and deliver": a photographers' culling tool
- "Show me every photo of Nani": Google Photos face groups
- "The folder is here and the album is not": Phopho and Toto
Using more than one
Many weddings use more than one of these, and that is fine. The photographer culls and edits, guests get their photos from a sharing app, and the two of you make the album from the full folder.
If your photographer already gave you a small, finished set and you know the photos you love, you may not need any help with the album. If the folder is thousands of photos, starting from an album that is already made, and still yours to change, is usually faster.

Questions people ask
Is Phopho and Toto a photo-sharing app?
No. We are not a gallery for guests. We help the two of you make your wedding album from the folder your photographer sent.
What is the difference between photo sharing and album sorting?
Photo sharing gets each guest their own photos. Album sorting turns the whole folder into one album for the couple, by person and by function.
What is culling?
The photographer's step of going through a shoot to choose what to edit and deliver. Tools such as Aftershoot and Narrative Select are built for it.
Our photographer already culled the photos. Do we still need help?
Maybe. Culling makes the delivery better, but a multi-day wedding can still arrive as thousands of photos. If the album is waiting, that is the job we do.
Can Google Photos make our wedding album?
It can group photos by face in your own library, where available. It keeps everything, so choosing what goes in the album, function by function, is still yours to do.
Can we use a sharing app and Phopho and Toto together?
Yes. Guests get their photos from the sharing app; the two of you make the album from the full folder with us.
